Diving with Antarctic Penguins                   - 25 March 2004

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Polar REsearch Institue in Tokyo, have attached miniature cameras on the back of Antarctic Adelie penguins in order study their underwater behaviour. Adelie penguins inhabit the Signy Islands and live in large colonies. With the newly adapted cameras biologists hope to study closely their 2-3 day hunting trips and interaction with their environment.

Underwater filming of these agile animals for prolonged periods is very diffiicult, both logistically and because penguins can cover great distances while hunting. These underwater images are the first in the absense of humans.
